The presence of mobile money shops or PoS agents on almost every Nigerian street has greatly contributed to the rise of debit card fraud, particularly in the past five years. However, there have been numerous reports about how mobile money shop agents/salespersons connive with street boys supposedly “Yahoo! boys” in sweeping clean, the bank accounts of customers who used their services, particularly those who made withdrawals. To get this in seconds, PoS agents have been reported to capture customers card details with their camera phones in less than 5 seconds while trying to help them initiate their original transaction then perpetrate their evil act immediately after the customers have left or most times, in the dead of the night when their victims are fast asleep and unaware of what was happening or about to. The latter is often executed by cybercriminals with sound knowledge of websites that do not require OTP to make purchases after which proceeds from the transaction will be shared based on the agreed percentage.

Atleast1.1m Persons Likely To Die From North-East Nigeria Crisis – UNDP

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has projected that over 1.1 million persons are likely to die from the crisis in the North-East region of Nigeria.

This was contained in a report by the UNDP on the impact of the insurgency in the region presented in a virtual meeting by the country director, Mohammed Yahaya on Thursday in Abuja.

According to Yahaya, at least 35,000 people have so far been killed directly by the insurgents, with 350,000 said to have died indirectly as a result of the crisis.

On the socioeconomic impact of the crisis on the northeast states, he says $27.8 billion have been lost in GDP, plunging at least 1.4 million people into poverty.

The report further showed at least 1.8 million children in the northeast are not enrolled in schools as a result of the conflict.

American Airlines Looks to Downsize

Nearly five years after closing its merger with US Airways, American Airlines plans to trim its corporate bureaucracy.

In a message Tuesday to employees, American CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said the company has more executives than required since it has completed most of the difficult work of integrating the two airlines.

They said most cuts will come through job elimination and attrition, but noted some executives may lose their jobs. They also said executives who have been with American at least two years and leave voluntarily will be eligible for severance.

President Buhari in London today pledged that in furtherance of his administration's ongoing war against corruption, Nigeria will soon begin the full implementation of the principles of the Open Contracting Data Standard. 

In Nigeria's country statement to the Anti-Corruption Summit hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, President Buhari said that the Federal Government will apply the Open Contracting Data Standard to major projects in the oil, transportation, power, health, education and other sectors.

Customer Slams Unity Bank With N100bn Libel Suit

Unity Bank Plc has been dragged before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court by an internationally acclaimed reputable building and civil engineering construction company, Bulet International (Nig) Ltd, over a N100 billion alleged libel suit.

The first plaintiff is Bulet International (Nig) Ltd while the second plaintiff is its chief executive, former minister of water resources and former president of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Ismaila Isa.

Trouble started in 2013 when Unity Bank commenced debt recovery actions against Bulet at the FCT High Court and the case was dismissed on February 24, 2014, for lack of reasonable cause of action by the court.

2015 budget: Nigeria’s economy remains strong — Okogu

The Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Dr Bright Okogu, on Wednesday in Abuja said that the Nigerian economy was still strong in spite of global economic uncertainties.

Okogu made the statement while making a public presentation on the proposed budget for 2015.

He said that while monitoring the recent uncertainties in the global economy of the country, it was noted that certain sectors in the economy were still growing in spite of the recent oil price shock.
